Natural Rainbow Obsidian Piece

This piece of 100% natural obsidian was mined in Mexico. It appears to be black, but if you look closely at the freshly broken surface in the photo at left you can see that it actually has areas with green and purple sheen visible at certain angles. The beautiful sheen colors become much more pronounced when viewed with a bright light source on fresh surfaces or when polished. This piece of rainbow sheen obsidian is top-grade lapidary material, it would make a wonderful carving, or it could be made into a couple of 2.5" to 3" spheres with plenty of material left over for cabochon gems. This rare quartzoid specimen is completely natural - just as it was found within the earth. It is a naturally terminated smoky quartz crystal with very dark natural color - it is so dark that it appears to be almost black. It shows vitreous luster on the multiple stepped pyramidal terminations which are in very good overall condition with some abraded areas. This naturally terminated smoky quartz crystal has what appears to be a 4-sided termination, but it is actually the juncture of two bi-pyramidal end terminations with no prismatic faces in between. The mineralogical term for this bi-pyramidal form without prismatic faces is "quartzoid". These natural sunstone specimens were mined in India. They have occasional grains of fiery orange sunstone intergrown with gray feldspar (see the inset close-up photo at left). The sunstone grains display flashes of beautiful pink-orange and gold iridescence at different angles. The best way to see the iridescence is to wet the material and view it under sunlight (or polish it!). These make great specimens of natural untreated sunstone just as they are, although they are also suitable as lapidary rough to make commercial grade sunstone cabochons, carvings, etc...

This natural color (Zoisite) crystal was stated by our supplier to have been mined in the Nangarhar Provence of Afghanistan. It actually is two crystals that are inter-grown and they are also doubly terminated. They grade from semi transparent at the base to completely transparent gem-grade at their teminations. Its prismatic faces and the terminations have vitreous luster, are in very good condition. This natural color tanzanite crystal has weak dichroism with a very light greenish blue gray color in one direction and a light pinkish gray when viewed from the front as shown in the photo at left which was taken under a mixture of incandescent and flourescent light. This natural specimen of transparent topaz has an area inside with very pale blue natural color (almost colorless). It has not been heated or treated in any way! This topaz crystal is naturally terminated on most surfaces with some abraded areas. There is a 5mm long crystal inclusion of a different mineral inside the topaz. This naturally terminated topaz crystal is transparent with a large gem grade area inside that would yield a 50 carat flawless gem. This topaz crystal is colorless in most positions, however it does have a small area with very pale blue natural color. This topaz is completely natural - it has not been heated or treated in any way. Its natural terminations show vitreous luster. They are in mostly very good condition with some abraded areas. This specimen of uvite tourmaline crystals on calcite matrix was discovered in Bahia, Brazil. The uvite crystals have strong brownish red color, vitreous luster, and flattened trigonal prismatic form. They have natural terminations in mostly very good condition, and some of the crystals are terminated on each end (known as bi-terminated or double-terminated). The largest uvite crystal measures 6.5mm in diameter. This specimen also has some small calcite crystals on its surface. The photo at left was taken under both fluorescent and incandescent light. This specimen of uvite tourmaline crystals on calcite matrix was discovered in Bahia, Brazil. The uvite crystals have beautiful green color, vitreous luster, and flattened trigonal prismatic form. Most have natural terminations on each end that are in very good condition (known as bi-terminated or double-terminated). The uvite crystals range in size up to about 6mm in diameter. This specimen of natural color ruby in matrix was mined in Tanzania. The ruby has very deep red color, and the matrix is mostly black hornblende wiht a small amount of green zoisite. The hornblende becomes more coarse grained on one side with several hornblende crystals reaching just over 1/4 inch long.
