This natural specimen has interlayered chalcedony and white common opal. When held to an incandescent light the chalcedony has areas with light brown, orange, and rich deep brownish red natural colors. The photo at left is viewed under incandescent light.

Natural chalcedony is cryptocrystalline quartz with microfibrous structure. There are many sub-varieties of chalcedony like agate which is banded chalcedony. Red translucent chalcedony is known as carnelian. There are dozens of named agate (banded chalcedony) sub-varieties which are usually based on distinctive patterns or colors.
