Tanzanite is a rare gem variety of the mineral known as zoisite, which is a mineral in the epidote group. Tanzanite's history began in the early 1960's when it was first identified. The name tanzanite was given to this zoisite variety in 1968
by the New York jeweler Tiffany & Co. in honor of the country where it was discovered in the Merelani Hills near Mount Kilimanjaro. Today, tanzanite of commercial importance is still found only in the Merelani Hills of Tanzania, and we specialize in real tanzanite that was mined in those Merelani Hills! Right now, we are offering natural raw tanzanite pieces and tanzanite mineral specimens in a variety of sizes and qualities, as well as a selection of naturally terminated gem-grade tanzanite crystals. See also our selection of real tanzanite gemstones displayed at the top of this page - each one was handcrafted from a genuine tanzanite crystal mined at Merelani! Be sure to see our real tanzanite jewelry items set with these genuine tanzanite gemstones.
