Peridot is the natural green gem variety of the mineral olivine. From ancient times until the eighteenth century, peridot was known as topazion or topaz. This was because one of peridot's earliest mining locations
was on the island of Topazios in the Red Sea (known today as Zebirget and previously as the
Isle of St. John). In the eighteenth century
the official name topaz was given to our mineral topaz of today, and gem-grade green olivine crystals then became
known as peridot! Peridot is still being mined today at several locations around the world. We specialize in unheated and untreated real peridot that was mined in the earth!
