Natural quartz crystals typically form in open cavities inside the earth in quartz veins and granitic pegmatites, usually as colorless rock crystals, although sometimes occurring as smoky quartz crystals, citrine crystals, or as amethyst crystals depending on the presence of trace impurities within the quartz crystal of the elements iron and aluminum, and on the oxidation states of these trace impurities. Secondary quartz crystals typically form on cryptocrystalline quartz in cavities and vugs.
