Topaz is an aluminum silicate that forms from fluorine bearing vapors present during the final stages of crystalization in some igneous rocks. Topaz is frequently found in vugs (open cavities) in rhyolitic lavas, and also in some granitic pegmatites where it commonly occurs with quartz, feldspar and mica. Natural topaz is usually colorless, however it can occur naturally with many different hues including shades of yellow, orange, pink and blue. The rarest of the naturally occuring colors in topaz are in shades of orange-pink which are commonly known as Imperial Topaz. Imperial Topaz is found today at just a few locations around the world, the most famous of which is at Ouro Preto, Brazil.
